France still under state of emergency after Nov. 13 attacks tied to ISIS left 130 dead

Early in the morning, a french teacher was stabbed by an assailant claiming to be from ISIS. The attack occurred early in the morning in the small suburb town of Auburvilliers around 7:00 am. The assailant walked into the school with a ski mask on and wielding scissors and box-cutters and began to attack the teachers. One of the teachers who was attacked was sent to the hospital but was reported to not have life threatening wounds. Since the attack occurred so early in the morning, the children had not arrived and the only people in the school were staff and teachers. 

This attack would most likely be caused from ISIS urging their followers to attack french teachers. ISIS claims the french secular education system is bad and poisoning kids.

My opinion:

I think this event just symbolizes how much of a threat ISIS still is. The fight of ISIS is now not just fought in the battle grounds but in our own homes. I believe that we should rejoin the fight against ISIS as they have already attacked and killed many innocent people. ISIS is slowly increasing in power and their attacks are growing more and more frequent. This is why believe that Canada should rejoin the fight and try and end the war sooner.

Many people have speculated why Russia has had so much success over the past years at the Olympics. With the somewhat lacking performance in the 2014 Beijing Olympics, people have started to accuse and question why Russian athletes would be so much better at home turf but not in other parts of the world.. Some of the accusations have been pointed to drug and other methods that would have given them an advantage over the other athletes that competed in the competition with sabotage being one.. On Tuesday November 10th, the International Olympics Committee called the IAAF to press charges on the Russian athletes, coaches and anyone else involved . Any athletes that would have won a medal but have been found guilty will have their medal removed and given to the next person who actually deserves it.

My opinion:

With the Olympics being such a big event with people watching from around the world, I think that the committee could have done a better job with this. I think that drug use has always been a problem when it comes to sports but it just isn't always sniffed out. Therefore, I think that Olympic Committee should have more testing methods to test for the drugs. As for the sabotage, the committee needs to find more trustworthy people that can provide an honest help to the Olympics. 

Whooping cough cases triple in Mauricie and Central Quebec

From the month of October to now, whooping cough cases have increased in the Mauricie-Central Quebec region. In October, there were 40 confirmed cases but now, the number has tripled meaning it is nearly 4 times the normal annual size. The outbreak has effected everyone in the area however, it has effected young children the most. There have been many schools, elementary and high schools alike, that have reported cases of whooping cough. Younger babies could also be infected with the disease by catching it from their parents who did not know they had whooping cough.  The effect of whooping cough or pertussis causes highly infectious bacterial that could go up to the lungs and other respiratory systems that will induce swelling and inflammation. Whooping cough also effects the Western and Maritime part of Canada too. New Brunswick itself already has suffered from 40 cases and PEI has 15 confirmed cases.

My Opinion:

I think that this is a serious health problem that more people should be aware about. The risk of catching this is very high due to the coughing symptom. I think that everyone in the area where the disease is high, should try and get the vaccine for it. People should also be more active in trying to keep the workplace, wherever that may be (i.e home, work, school) clean so it might limit how much of the disease is past around. Lastly, I think that if people believe that they might have symptoms of whooping cough, they should go to the doctor or medical clinic and get check out to make sure they wont accidentally infect a friend or family.

With the absence of Messi due to an injury, 2 members of FC Barcelona has to step up and take the spotlight. Neymar de Silva Jr. and Luis Suarez have both stepped up and scored and won in crucial games to keep Barcelona at the top level. With Messi generally being the star of the front 3, this has given them a chance to show all of the fans how much skill they all possess. A highlight of this was last nights game when Neymar scored probably one of the best and prettiest goals of his career. During the game verse Villareal, both Neymar and Suarez both scored to ensure the victory for Barcelona but Neymar's goal stood out.

My Opinion:

I think that Messi being injured was a good thing. Sure the star of Barcelona and the worlds best player is injured and doesn't get to play for 2 months, but this gives chances for the other 2 big stars of FC Barcelona to get more play time and experience. AS you can see, both Neymar and Suarez both have showed everyone that they can replace Messi in times of need. 

Jordanian police officer shoots 4 dead, including 2 Americans

A Jordanian Policeman opened fire on 4 trainers in a police compound killing 2 Americans, 1 South American and 1 Jordanian. The assailant also wounded 5 more people, with 2 being American. The officers in the compound were part of a State Department training program and consisted mostly of civilians with none being identified by the public media. The Jordanian killed during the attack was a civilian working in the compound. The center itself was created back in 2003 and has helped train over 53,000 police men to try and enforce law in the area. The US has military presence in the area due to the threat of extremism in the neighboring countries. They are worried about "revenge attacks" that may happen on Jordanian soil. The American troops stationed in the area have suffered attacks like this before from other police officers and troops they thought they supposedly could trust. Sadly, this is becoming more and more normal.

My opinion.

I think that the death of these different soldiers show just how sporadic the area truly is. I think that they (US, Canada, other countries) should try harder and invest more resources into trying to counter the threat. With more and more people joining ISIS or other terrorism groups, threats like this would just increase in strength. I think with more resources invested, we could end this quicker with less unnecessary deaths like these.

A Canadian women who has been living in Canada for almost 10 decades and had her application denied by Citizen and Immigration Canada. Joan Stirling, 99 has been been living in Canada ever since she immigrated from London, England back in 1916 and wants to apply for a health card however, the government are not willing to due to the fact that Sterling can not provide proof that she is indeed a Canadian citizen. Since the government rejected Sterling's application, Sterling and her friend Diana Watson, have been fighting by showing legal documents proving that Sterling has indeed lived in Canada. Diana believes that Sterling has to acquire her health card because she believes that Sterling must access the health system due to her increasing age. Diana has since then contacted many people including the Go Public! people who have asked the Citizen and Immigration Canada to re-evaluate her case. After reviewing the case, their response was that Sterling is an official Canadian citizen based on the Citizenship Act made in June.

My opinion:

Although i believe that in the end, the Citizen and Immigration offices did the right thing, i think that they should have came to the same conclusion sooner. I think this because they delayed a 99 year old women who is rightfully a Canadian citizen the proper healthcare that she deserved. The Citizen and Immigration also, by the looks of it, ignored any of the requests Sterlings friend Diana made and only made an attempt to review Sterlings case when a 3rd party got involved ( Go Public!). I think Citizen and Immigration Canada must try harder in the future so more rightfull Canadians will not get left out like Sterling was.     

Joyce Mitchell, former prison worker, gets up to 7 years for helping killers escape

 An American women was sentenced up to 7 years in jail after deliberately helping 2 murderers escape from a high security prison. Joyce Mitchell, one of the 500 prison workers is being accused of helping and providing the tools/means of escape for the 2 prisoners. After the escape of the 2 prisoners, there was a search that included 1000+ people and forced many people in the surrounding neighbourhood away from their homes with the thought of a known murderer on the loose. One of the prisoners, Richard Matt was killed by a border security guard and the other, David Sweat was wounded and taken back to the prison.  Mitchell claims that Richard Matt threatened to kill her family and friends if she did not help them escape.

My opinion:

I think that we need to do more security/background checks on people that would get hired to work in such demanding positions. I think that we should also improve security on the so called "maximum security" because even if the 2 prisoners escape their cell, it seems hard to believe that they just walked past all of the security guards and walked into the woods to escape. 

Obama snubs Waldorf-Astoria hotel amid Chinese espionage fears

With the increase of technology these days, many world leaders including U.S President Barrack Obama are getting increasingly more fearful of communication bugs that may have been deployed in an attempt to gain information on opposing powers. This year during the 2015 U.N General Assembly, will be the first year since the 1930's that an American head of state will not be staying in its famous presidential suite. This fear could be because a Chinese company,  Angbang Insurance Group, bought it last fall. The Angbang Company also has been reported to have strong ties with the Communist Party back in China. This would not be the first time one of the countries have tried to send hearing devices to other world leaders. In 2002 the US sent a plane to China to serve as a Air Force 1 replica for the Chinese to use, however when the Chinese looked at the place carefully, they found many listening devices.

In my opinion, I don't think that any of the countries are going to stop trying to spy on each other because everyone wants to be on top and have to most power. I also think that Obama was doing the right thing because the timing of when the hotel was bought and who it was bought by does not seem like a coincidence. I think this will have a long term effect because as technology improves and more and more governments starts to use bugs to find secrets about others, many countries will start to be more paranoid and will start to fall apart. If countries continue using this, many of the people inside the country will also stop talking and socializing because they would be too worried because they would think that the government is listening at every moment.

Dwayne Samson, captain in 'murder for lobster' case, sentenced to 10 years

A Nova Scotia'n lobster fisherman and his fishing crew has been convicted of manslaughter and will serve at least 10 years in prison. The crew of the "Twin Maggie" allegedly shot fisherman Philip Boudreau when they saw him tampering with lobster traps they had set up previously. Dwayne Matthew Samson was one of the 3 who were accused of shooting, ramming and gaffing Boudreau and was already sentenced to 10 years of prison. Reports of the incident say that the crew of the "Twin Maggie" were out to collect lobster from their traps when they spotted Boudreau in a small skiff cutting the lines and stealing the lobsters inside. When the crew spotted this, they began to shoot and ram at the skiff until Boudreau fell out. They then proceeded to gaff him and tow him behind their boat, dragging him further out to see. Many reports also say that the idea behind the murder of Philip Boudreau was mostly suggested by Samson's father; James Landry with there being many statements in which Landry was seen saying " I wanted to kill him". This may have been one of the reason Landry was sentenced up to 14 years imprisonment. The second deckhand, Craig Landry was charged for being an accessory to the crime and was sentenced to 28 days with 2 years probation.


My Opinion:

 I believe that although killing Boudreau was not called for and was definitely taken to an extreme, Boudreau was also very much to be blamed for this as he should not be tampering with other peoples lobster fishing lines. I do believe that the jail time that the other 3 are facing was the right thing to do because they did commit a murder.
